The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, the USS DeWert and the USS Hurricane joined several tall ships and navy ships in Halifax this past weekend to take part in events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

Minister Counselor of Consular Affairs, Sylvia Johnson, who represented Ambassador Jacobson and the Consulate at multiple events over the weekend, stated that “the real legacy of the War of 1812 is the 200 years of peace that followed it.”

USCGC Eagle participated in Tall Ships 2012 while the USS DeWert and USS Hurricane joined Canadian ships in the start of the Great Lakes Deployment, an eleven-week tour that will include stopovers in thirteen cities on the Saint-Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes.

While in Halifax cadets and sailors took part in multiple events including a sunset ceremony at the Halifax Citadel.
